The basic program gives ample time and space to students who are new to the world of fashion design and those who need to unlearn and correct some design errors by righting the wrongs on the structure built without having the ground knowledge of fashion design.
At Lamirah fashion academy, the focus is building a confident designer who not only understands the concept of garment construction but are equipped with the skills required to take the evolving fashion world by storm.
The program under the foundation course are under listed but not limited to:
1. DETAILED AND ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS – The basis to establishing a clean finished garment is taking accurate measurements. At Lamirah fashion, emphasis is laid here in order to ensure fit and proper body contouring.
With the advent of Ready To Wear garments, the industry needed to a certain amount of sizes to make producing clothing profitable. Too few sizes meant a certain size would have to cover too much territory and some people would have an extremely poor fit. Too many sizes would make less profit. It seemed that this was easier to achieve in the earlier days of Ready to Wear garments as there seemed to be less variation in body weight and types, but over time our body shape has changed significantly.
Measurements is a big deal and this is completely dealt with at the academy.
2. SEWING MACHINE, TYPES, FUNCTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING
Here, knowledge is passed to students on how to use the sewing machines, troubleshoot and make informed decisions on purchase of machine from the various types and brands.
3. FASHION CONCEPTUALIZATION AND TERMINOLOGIES
What makes a good fashion designer without properly harmed with the right use of fashion terms and languages. At Lamirah fashion academy, such is exposed to students in order to be able to compete in any part of the world.
4. HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF FASHION
Having a good understanding of history on the course you are embarking on to decipher the present and predict the future creates a balanced mindset of what’s to come. This is part of our basic course and it’s narrowed down to the unique fashion spere in Nigeria.
5. FASHION ILLUSTRATION
The importance of sketching in fashion design can not be over-emphasized as it gives the road map towards achieving an out-of thought design and given style interpretation in its simplest form. Here, students are exposed to the art of fashion drawing and rendering techniques at Lamirah fashion academy.
6. COLOUR THEORY AND ITS APPLICATION IN TEXTILE PRODUCTION AND DESIGN
Here, students at Lamirah fashion academy are exposed to colours and how it applies to them as designers.
Color is used to attract attention, group related elements, convey meaning, and generally enhance the aesthetics of your site. It can be used to organize your elements and create a visual hierarchy in your design. A small dose of color that contrasts with your main color will draw attention.

7. FABRICS FOR FASHION
One of our primary conveyors in expressing our thoughts of designs is textiles/fabrics /materials.
At Lamirah fashion academy, students will sure be exposed to the different types and textures of fabrics in order to effectively communicate their designs.
What and what not to use in the expression of designs. Fabric samples are felt, looked at in order for them as designers to make informed decisions on their styling.
8. UNDERSTANDING SILHOUETTE /SHAPES AND SIZES
This is an expository lecture to students of Lamirah fashion academy in order to create flattering garments and follows the outline of their garments.
9. SEWING TECHNIQUES
There are sewing techniques every designer MUST know. Here are a few of them :
Zig-zag stitches, seams finishing, applique, zipper, under-stitching, and velvet fabrics.
Techniques are not a shortcut to make your work easier but these are tricks to help you in making work simpler. These techniques are useful for the newbies who are still learning the basics of the stitching. We teach these and more under the foundation program at Lamirah fashion academy
10. GARMENT CONSTRUCTION
This is where step by step guide is provided to students at Lamirah fashion academy to ensure the desired outcome of a garment ranging from drafting the basic slopers- basic bodice, basic skirt and basic sleeve pattern, Construction of the basic slopers, Adaptation of the basic skirt sloper into different skirt garment patterns, A-line skirt, Flared skirt, narrow hem/wedge skirt, gathered skirt, pleated skirt, Adaptation of the basic bodice patterns into different bodice garment patterns, Batwing tops, kimono, Iro and buba, Basic shift and sheath dresses, Sleeve pattern adaptation
11. PROJECT DEFENSE
At the end of the basic program, each student is to embark on a sewing project of at least 2 garments in order to ensure completion of the outline.
